Originally Published Thursday, January 29, 2015 I've spent the past year researching, writing, and developing this book, and I am so glad that it is now here, and available to help those who suffer from tension based chronic pain. This book is a description of my personal health journey in which I overcame decades of daily musculoskeletal pain and discomfort, and found complete recovery. This experience completely changed my understanding of health, and fitness, and utterly transformed view about the rest of my life. After finding relief, my feelings of joy, freedom, and liberation is one that I hope to bring to everyone who is suffering from chronic musculoskeletal pain. What has worked here for me as described in this chronic pain book, may or may not work for each person suffering from chronic back-neck-shoulder pain, because each case is different; but it is truly my wish that it will bring relief to many readers. If someone reads this book, and learns from my own experience, and is able to achieve a measure of relief from his/her own chronic pain, then this project will be a success. The proposition that physical and mental health are intertwined; and that physical ailments can be exacerbated, or even caused by emotional stress, is now widely accepted as a general principal in both the mainstream and alternative medical communities. This connection between physical and emotional health is a concept with deep roots in the history of medicine. Both Eastern and Western traditions in the ancient and early modern world – from Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, to classical Greek philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle, and European intellectuals as diverse as Descarte and Kant – have speculated on the ways in which the health of mind and body are mutually dependent on one another. Most of us already know that our minds and bodies are connected physiologically but how and to what degree? In the hustle bustle of our busy lives, it can be difficult for many of us see how this connection affects us in the day-to-day. My search for a cure for my chronic pain syndrome led me to make some simple changes to my life. Not in a million years would I have believed that the answer to my chronic pain condition would be so easily integrated into my life, and be able resolve my pain so quickly. These changes allowed me to an understanding that mind-to-body synergy affects us all on a very profound level. A catalyst for writing this book was half a lifetime of chronic pain that was often near debilitating, and which robbed the author of joy, energy and a positive spirit. Hopefully, sufferers will read this story, and find this simple, free, intrinsic ability they have within themselves right now, so they can break their own cycle of chronic pain for good. This book project has been a true labor of love, because there is a lot to love about being pain free. Back Story is my personal health journey in seeking an end to decades of chronic back pain, and other discomforts including sciatica. While I was going through this long, terrible episode of chronic pain, I believed that I was suffering from some sort of musculoskeletal disease, which over time left me feeling quite hopeless; until I discovered the mind-body connection cure that brought an end to the muscle tension, and ceaseless pain. To all those who suffer from chronic neck, back or shoulder pain, I hope for a quick return to health, and a joyous, peaceful life for you in the future... While sitting here at my desk, writing, and working on my blog for hours at a time, I stop and wonder, “How is it possible that I am capable of doing this, when a little more that a year ago I would have had to carefully climb out of my seat after 20 minutes, due to the agonizing pulling, stretching, and aching pain in my back, and down through my legs?” Thankfully, these days I'm able to do whatever I want - without pain.
There was no easy fix for me, as I had tried many therapies, remedies, and exercises for decades. None of the standard approaches helped me. Some things that I attempted would help me for a period of time, but the pain always returned, and I was back to square one again. Sometimes it would even be worse than before. This pattern left me despondent, and I was sure there was no hope for me, but I had to go on living, so I kept looking. Finally, a day came when I learned about tension-based pain, and what it can do to the body. I knew immediately that this was the basis of my problem. I had been told that I had a lot of tension in my back by my doctors, and the reason they gave as to why it was there was never quite satisfactory to me. I found that tension was actually the cause of my pain, but it had always been presented as just some mysterious symptom. After so much time spent with traditional treatments for chronic pain, I felt it couldn't do me any harm to try something different. I developed a method to break the terrible cycle of tension and pain, and this was a life changing discovery for me. I will always be glad that I was willing to look outside the mainstream for an answer. If you experience chronic back-neck-shoulder pain, keep seeking, continue to try new things, and one day, hopefully, you will find exactly what you need. I will tell you from my experience, it is very difficult to stay positive when one is suffering from chronic pain. Wake up in the morning, you begin to move and you feel that twinge in your back-neck-shoulder, and you know the day will be like yesterday, and the day before that, and maybe many previous days. Everything you do, or even if you do nothing at all, will be accompanied by pain. You may feel just a little ache, a burning pain, an excruciating pain, or maybe that painful place on your body will be quiet for just a short time, but you imagine that it will always be with you. The last thing you feel like doing is getting up and starting your day. You feel badly, you feel hurt, and you want to just stay in your bed, and feel better, but you know that lying in bed all day doesn't feel great either. So, you do get up and go, because life goes on, and it doesn't stop for chronic pain. You care for your family, do your job, take care of your home, and try to find some joy, but all those normal things feel colored with the grayness that is chronic pain. This was my life for the better part of twenty years. I had times when I had little pain, and life was pretty good, I had times when I had severe pain, but I kept going through it, and I had periods when I was paralyzed with pain, and was completely unable to get out of bed without assistance. Well, that all sounds fairly bleak, doesn't it? Please take heart my friends - there is hope! You will have a new body before you know it. Each tissue of the body has its own turnover time:
If you're alive, you are here learning, so there is always hope! The body you have now which is causing you pain will be a different body soon, and that change may bring you the possibility of a future that is pain-free. |
