Originally Published Friday, April 10, 2015 If you have chronic pain you may or may not know the number 338.29, but if you have engaged a healthcare profession for assistance with your pain at some time in the past, one of those health care providers (HCPs) has probably written that number in your medical file, or on an insurance claim form. 338.29 is the ICD-9-CM Vol. 1 diagnostic code for Other chronic pain. The code describes an aching sensation that persists for more than a few months. It may or may not be associated with trauma or disease, and may persist after the initial injury has healed. Its localization, character, and timing are more vague than with acute pain.
The pain is a feeling set off in the nervous system. Acute pain lets you know that you may be injured or a have problem you need to take care of. Chronic pain is different. The pain signals go on for weeks, months, or even years. The original cause may have been an injury or infection. There may be an ongoing cause of pain, such as arthritis or cancer. But in some cases there is no clear cause.
No clear cause, indeed...
As a person who supposedly had no clear cause for more than two decades, THERE IS A CAUSE... I suffered for two decades before I figured out that my pain was caused by tension. Once I understood the cause, I was cured in very short amount of time. If a doctor, chiropractor, or other Healthcare Professional tells you that there is no clear cause for your pain, and they tell you just have to live with it - don't accept that. Don't quit, don't give up, and understand that the cause and cure for your pain may be right around the corner. Of course this is my experience and my opinion, and every individual case is different.
