My answer to: Is myofascial relief overhyped? 

Myofascial Release is generally considered safe and effective for most people, but it can only do one thing, increase circulation to parts of the body for a short period of time. This is also true about massage or any other any body work therapy.  
Most people seek out these therapies, because they are unaware that the tightness and pain in their bodies are caused by the tension created by their reaction to stress, as well as their own negative emotions. This type of pain has many names, but I call it Tension Based Pain, because it is easy to understand.

Tension Based Pain is different than pain that may be caused by trauma or an organic cause such as infection, cancer, etc.

There are many simple things that we can do to overcome our reaction to stress and the pain or chronic pain that often follows, such as:

* Deep relaxation
* Progressive relaxation
* Meditation
* Breathing exercises
* Therapy
* Changes to lifestyle

Is Myofascial Release worth the hype? It’s hard to say, as some people find it very helpful, while others could take it or leave it.

​How can I exercise regularly to prevent tension headaches?

Tension headaches are caused by the autonomic nervous system’s reaction to stress and negative emotions. It is the flight or fight response at work. The tension tightens muscles in the head, which restricts blood flow, creating a lack of oxygen that results in pain. Tension headaches are just another form of Tension-Based Pain, which can occur anywhere in the body.

Exercise is good for everyone and it brings many health benefits; helps circulation; increases energy; makes us feel happier; helps to keep a healthy weight, better sleep, and keeps the body in good working order. 
So, regular exercise will provide benefits that can help to reduce stress in the body, but it may not be enough to stop tension headaches from occurring.

It is necessary for most people to put some time, energy and thought into reducing the effects of stress and negative emotions in order to relieve tension headaches, low-back pain and other body pain. 
These methods can be used to reduce the involuntary tension response and the pain it causes.
  • Practice techniques like breathing exercises
  • Review your negative emotions, and reduce their effects on your mind, make choices about your thoughts and emotions
  • Let go of negative emotions as you are able
  • Try deep muscle relaxation techniques like progressive relaxation methods

This is an area of human health that should be taught in every school, but sadly it is not.
